So, I wanted to share a quick-change technique you can use if you have a list of things you “can’t” do.
- I can’t find enough time for myself
- I can’t finish work on time
- I can’t find a good relationship
Sooner or later you may hear the litany of negatives from your friends, clients, TV, social media, or maybe even yourself.
But you can now notice how easy it is to get a new perspective.
Create this new positive perspective by using different language …
What happens when you change that “can’t” to “choose”?
- I choose to find enough time for myself
- I choose to finish work on time
- I choose to find a good relationship
Well, that changes the perspective quickly, does it not?
Every outcome we get is the result of our choices.
Be curious about how that new statement feels. What is it like when you hear it or see it in that way? Chew on that for a while and wonder if it delivers the sweet smell of success you are seeking. (How’s that for being inclusive of representational systems?)
Reframing responsibility goes a long way toward facilitating long-lasting change. The one with the desire for a different outcome has to take the actual action to get the change they want. Choosing to use this different language can naturally lead to a different mindset. That shift allows the client to discover a comfortable path to the better outcome.
